Welcome to Boost Mode, my weekly notebook from the road in international baseball.

After more than 25+years in the game, one thing has become clear:

The game never stops teaching you — if you’re paying attention.

So every other week I hold myself accountable to growth by sharing four things:

What I’m Reading.
What I’m Watching.
What I’m Learning.
What I’m Writing.

Some ideas come from research.
Some from conversations.
Some from real moments in the game.

But the goal is always the same:

Observe. Adapt. Compete.

🧐 📖 What I am Reading: “Move” - Become Unstoppable – Gilbert Enoka

We’re right there…

End of the offseason.
Spring games starting.
Opening Day around the corner.

You can feel it.

The work is mostly done.
Now it’s about who shows up when it counts.

And I’ll be honest…

This chapter didn’t hit me like a “leadership book.”

It felt more like a reminder.

A check-in.

Let me ask you something real quick:

When things speed up…
when you’re 0-for-3…
when the game gets uncomfortable…

Who are you?

Not your swing.
Not your numbers.

YOU.

⚓ WHAT HIT ME

Enoka talks about great leaders…
but the word I kept coming back to was:

Anchored.

The best guys I’ve ever been around…

They’re not guessing in big moments.

They don’t become someone new.

👉 They just become more of who they already are.

🧭 SO WHAT’S THE NORTH STAR?

I think we overcomplicate this.

Your North Star isn’t some big speech.

It’s simple.

👉 It’s the thing that doesn’t change when everything else does.

⚾ REAL EXAMPLES (THIS IS WHERE IT GETS REAL)

Here’s what a clear North Star actually looks like:

  • “I compete every pitch—no matter the result.”

  • “I control my body and my breath before every pitch.”

  • “I’m a great teammate—even when I’m not playing.”

  • “I don’t give away at-bats.”

  • “No BCD—no blaming, complaining, or being defensive.”

Nothing fancy.

But under pressure?

👉 That’s EVERYTHING.

🧠 WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THIS CHAPTER

The All Blacks didn’t just talk leadership.

They checked it.

Every week, their leaders asked:

  • What did I lead?

  • Where should I have stepped in—but didn’t?

  • What did I miss?

No ego.

Just awareness.

All Blacks Famous “Haka”

That’s that “Viking with a mother’s heart” balance right there.

👉 High standards
👉 Real care
👉 Honest reflection

⚾ WHY THIS MATTERS RIGHT NOW

This is the moment.

Not Opening Day.

Right now.

Because once the season starts…

👉 You don’t rise to your goals
👉 You fall to your habits and identity

So if your identity isn’t clear yet…

You’re going to drift.

And drift in this game?

It’s quiet… but it’s deadly.

🔥 SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

Take a few minutes today.

No pressure. Just be honest.

  • Who do I want to be when it’s not going my way?

  • What do I stand for—no matter what?

  • What will NOT change about me this season?

That’s your North Star.

🥁 THE CLOSE

The truth is…

You don’t need to become someone new this season.

You just need to be clear on who you already are—and live it.

Because when things get hard…

And they will…

👉 Clarity gives you calm
👉 Calm gives you control

And that’s what this game really comes down to.

🎥 WHAT I’M WATCHING -

The Press Box Chronicles – Jeff Pearlman

I’ve been watching a lot of Jeff Pearlman lately.

If you don’t know him…

He’s not polished.
He’s not trying to impress you.
He’s just… real.

And I think that’s why I like him.

He talks the way most of us actually think.

Messy. Honest.
A little self-deprecating.
But there’s depth there.

👉 No act. No mask.

And this week, he told the story of Ron LeFlore.

Ron LeFlore

⚾ WHY THIS STORY HITS

If you don’t know LeFlore…

He went from prison… to the big leagues.

No travel ball.
No academy.
No perfect path.

Just… a shot.
And something inside him that said:

👉 “I’m not staying here.”

That’s a North Star.

Not a goal.

A direction.

⚾ A MOMENT I’LL NEVER FORGET

This one hit me personally.

Because I actually met him.

I was playing in the Frontier League…

We had just played his team (Cook County) the night before.

Next morning… July 4th.

I get called into the office.

And you already know…

👉 That’s not a good meeting.

Manager tells me:

They signed another outfielder.
They can’t carry five.
I’m the odd man out.

Just like that.

And then he says:

“Go across the clubhouse… talk to Mr. LeFlore.”

So I walk over.

Sit in his office.

And I remember just looking at him like…

Man… this guy made it out of prison to the big leagues.

He’s sitting there… chain-smoking Kool cigarettes…

Just calm. Been through it all.

We talk.

He tells me they just signed a guy…
but to stay ready… stay in touch.

And as I’m leaving, he says:

👉 “Hey Bennett… keep your head up and keep at it… you’ll catch on somewhere.”

Simple.

But I never forgot it.

🧭 HERE’S THE LESSON

That moment wasn’t about getting signed.

It was about something deeper.

Because when things don’t go your way…

When you get cut.
When you’re unsure.
When it feels like you’re drifting…

👉 What keeps you going?

That’s your North Star.

LeFlore had one in prison.

Not a contract.
Not stats.

👉 Just a belief: “I can be more than this.”

And for me?

In that moment…

It was:

👉 “I’m not done yet.”

⚾ BRING IT BACK TO YOU

You don’t need a perfect plan right now.

You don’t need everything figured out.

But you DO need something that holds when things shake.

Something that keeps you moving forward when it would be easier to stop.

That’s your WHY.

🔥 REAL TALK

Because here’s what I’ve learned…

The guys who last?

The ones who find a way?

They’re not always the most talented.

They’re the ones who…

👉 Stay with it
👉 Keep showing up
👉 Keep believing when there’s no evidence yet

That’s not hype.

That’s direction.

🥁 THE CLOSE

So yeah…

If you’re a sports fan, go check out Jeff Pearlman’s Press Box Chronicles.

You’ll get stories.

But more importantly…

👉 You’ll get perspective.

🧠 What I’m Learning

Gilbert Enoka — It’s Not How You Start

As I mentioned I’ve been reading Become Unstoppable this week…

And honestly, what I learned made me pause.

Because Gilbert Enoka didn’t start in a perfect place.

Not even close.

He grew up without parents.

No blueprint.
No clear path.

Then he steps into teaching…

In environments where kids didn’t want to be there.

Tough kids.
Disconnected.
Some just trying to get through the day.

And that’s where he learned something important:

👉 You don’t lead people by force.
👉 You lead by understanding them.

Fast forward…

He moves into mental performance.

And at that time?

Let’s be real…

👉 Mental Performance wasn’t “in.”
👉 Mental Performance wasn’t respected.
👉 A lot of people thought Mental Performance was soft… foo-foo… unnecessary.

Even decision-makers didn’t fully buy in.

They wanted more reps.
More discipline.
More grind.

But he stayed with it.

Quietly.

Consistently.

Then he walks into the All Blacks.

And here’s the part most people don’t know…

⚠️ IT WASN’T A GREAT CULTURE

When Enoka arrived…

This wasn’t the polished, dominant team we see now.

There were real issues:

👉 Alcohol-related poor decisions off the field
👉 Bullying inside the environment
👉 Players hiding injuries just to protect their spot
👉 Guys afraid to open the door for someone else to take the jersey

Think about that.

The most respected jersey in sport…

And players were operating from fear.

That’s not a talent issue.

👉 That’s a WHY issue.

🧭 THE SHIFT

Enoka didn’t try to “fix” everything overnight.

He helped them get clear.

👉 Who are we?
👉 What do we stand for?
👉 What does this jersey actually mean?

And slowly…

They shifted.

From:

Protecting the jersey
➡️ Earning the jersey

Fear-based decisions
➡️ Purpose-driven behavior

Individual survival
➡️ Team responsibility

That’s how one of the most successful teams in sports was built.

Not from perfection.

👉 From clarity.

⚾ WHY THIS MATTERS RIGHT NOW

We’re right there…

End of the offseason.
Spring games starting.
Opening Day coming.

This is where things get real.

Because when roles are uncertain…

When performance isn’t where you want it yet…

When pressure starts creeping in…

👉 You either drift…
👉 Or you anchor.

🔥 REAL EXAMPLE

Player A:

“I just don’t want to lose my spot.”

That’s fear.

Player B:

👉 “I show up every day to compete and make this team better—no matter my role.”

That’s a North Star.

🧠 THE LESSON

Enoka didn’t start on top.

He didn’t walk into a perfect system.

He built it.

Through people.
Through clarity.
Through purpose.

And the All Blacks didn’t become great because of talent alone.

They became great because:

👉 They knew who they were
👉 They knew what they stood for
👉 They lived it daily

🥁 THE CLOSE

So here’s the reminder this week:

It’s not how you start.

It’s not where you are right now.

👉 It’s what you’re building
👉 It’s what you’re aligning to
👉 It’s what you refuse to drift away from

Find your North Star.

And when things get uncomfortable…

Hold your line.

✍️ What I’m Writing

Win the War Within — Pillar 1

Lately I’ve been putting something together that’s been sitting with me for a while.

Not something new.

Actually… the opposite.

It’s really just a system built from everything I’ve learned over the years:

From playing.
From coaching.
From working with athletes across different countries and levels.

I’m calling it:

👉 Win the War Within

Because if we’re being honest…

That’s where most games are decided.

Not just mechanics.
Not just talent.

👉 What’s going on between the ears.

🧭 THE IDEA

This is going to be a simple system.

5 pillars.

Something players, coaches, even parents can actually use.

Not theory.

👉 Something you can apply before, during, and after competition.

And the first pillar?

It lines up perfectly with this week’s theme.

⚓ PILLAR 1 — KNOW YOUR NORTH STAR

Before anything else…

Before routines.
Before mechanics.
Before strategy.

You’ve got to answer one question:

👉 Who are you when it matters?

Because when the game speeds up…

When things don’t go your way…

When pressure hits…

You don’t rise to your goals.

👉 You fall to your identity.

⚾ WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE

This isn’t about big words or motivation.

It’s simple.

Your North Star is:

👉 The standard you hold
👉 The behaviors you repeat
👉 The things that don’t change when everything else does

Some real examples:

  • “I compete every pitch.”

  • “No BCD—no blaming, complaining, or being defensive.”

  • “I slow the game down with my breath.”

  • “I’m a great teammate—always.”

Nothing fancy.

But under pressure?

👉 That’s what shows up.

🧠 WHY THIS MATTERS

I’ve seen it over and over…

Players drift when things get hard.

They chase results.
They react to emotions.
They lose themselves in the moment.

Not because they don’t care.

👉 Because they’re not clear.

And clarity?

That’s what gives you calm.

🔥 WHERE THIS IS GOING

This is just Pillar 1.

We’ll build out the rest:

👉 How to reset
👉 How to focus
👉 How to stay present
👉 How to compete under pressure

But none of it works…

If you don’t start here.

🥁 THE CLOSE

The truth is…

Most players spend all their time trying to get better at the game.

But the best ones?

They get clear on who they are in the game.

That’s the difference.

Win the War Within starts there.

🎯 FINAL THOUGHT

I keep coming back to this…

Whether it’s Enoka finding his way…
LeFlore staying with it when things could’ve gone the other way…
or you right now heading into spring games…

None of it starts perfect.

Things get messy.

You doubt yourself.
You press a little.
You try to figure it out on the fly.

That’s normal.

But the guys who find their way through it…

They have something they can come back to.

Not something big or complicated.

Just something steady.

👉 “This is who I am.”
👉 “This is how I show up.”

And when things speed up…

They don’t have to search.

They just return to that.

So as things start to ramp up this week…

Just take a minute.

Get clear on your North Star.

Not perfect.

Just honest.

And when the game tests you…

Because it will…

Just come back to it.

Stay with it.
